September 22 - Day 132 - 'I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.' J. B. Priestley

What a lovely morning it was today - a bit chilly when I set off but otherwise clear and bright. The light bouncing off the heron in the river and creating a golden reflection on the water might not be as obvious from the picture. but it certainly looked very regal stood there.

I realise I’ve explained a little bit about herons before but I hadn’t realised that with a 6ft wingspan, they don’t weigh much more than a pheasant. (I suppose it helps the flight!). I also didn’t know that, like owls, they regurgitate fur and bones as pellets, and if disturbed (mainly on a nest) they will vomit semi-digested meals out of the nest. You didn’t realise you were going to get such useful advice from this blog did you but given that herons also nest in big trees, it is probably advisable not to make loud noises beneath them. I can’t imagine the impact of a heron’s part-digested meal of fish, newts, frogs and small mammals – but I wouldn’t like you or me to find out! I think that’s probably enough said for today.
